Well-known Southwestern artist L.B. Porter died May 18th. Born Lawrence Benjamin Porter on March 3, 1929 in Friona, TX, L.B. grew up in the Mesilla Valley. He attended what is now UTEP and earned BS, BA, and MA in Fine Arts degrees from NMSU.
L.B. began painting almost as soon as he could hold a brush. Working primarily in acrylic, he was renowned for introducing female nudes into traditional Southwestern landscapes. Among other honors, L.B. was accepted as a signature artist in Knickerbocker Artists of America, received national honors in the Campbell Soup Company competition, and was inducted into the El Paso International Museum of Art.
L.B. is survived by his son Carter B. Porter and wife, Christie (Farmersville, TX), his daughter Katherine U. Porter and husband, Jim Astholz (Phoenix, AZ), and their mother, Duffy B. Porter (formerly Las Cruces, NM, and now Farmersville); sister-in-law Marianne Porter (Socorro NM); nephews Bill Porter and wife Marilyn (Granbury, TX), Jim Porter and wife Tina (Princeton, IN), Al Porter and wife Cherri (Albuquerque, NM), and Randy Porter (Socorro).
