Born in Oklahoma, Steven Cass was a self taught painter of western landscapes, often populated with horses, buffalo and Indian figures. He is one-half Choctaw Indian and one-half Irish. He grew up learning the commercial sign business from his father and for 15 years operated his own commercial art business.

In 1995, he was hired by General Motors and is still employed there. In 1998, he saw the Prix de West Artshow at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and this inspired him to paint.
